More and more I find myself crossing paths with religious groups. Not necessarily in a negative sense, but just because they are another demographic that gets involved in community projects and the like. It has made me uncomfortable on occasion though when deciding what groups I want to work with or promote in any way. I feel that truth and knowledge are forces for good and that faith (religious or otherwise) is the enemy of learning. Most religions taken as a whole encourage things I consider incredibly harmful to society. Still, if you are in that precious minority for whom all religion tells you is that your god(s)/ess wants to you try not to be a jerk I support that more than a smart atheist who just doesn’t give a crap about other people (see, morality is an entirely separate issue from religion, something I’ve been trying to explain to people for YEARS). My negative reaction to faith is results oriented only. So I find myself in some positions where the ends definitely justify the means. Do I think the family getting medical care or food or a house cares if it was inspired by Jesus or just plain old altruism? Hell no! I dream of a day when people realize that they would still love their friends and family and community if they had not been instructed to do so by a higher power and are freed by the idea that goodness is just as inherent in humanity as the bad stuff. I hope some day reason replaces fear all over the world. I hope that one day people teach their children not to hate ANY ideas but to question and test them and embrace the information they discover even if it was not what they wanted to find. I can’t imagine that in such times there would be nearly as much hurt or need in the world and I have no plans to stop pushing for that reality. Until then I think the world needs all the help it can get, no matter who it comes from or what their motives are.
Just don’t invoke your god to justify oppression or discrimination and for fucks sake, do NOT try and convert me or I’m out of here. Deal?
