I said this to one of my best friends the other day:

My theory about DJing had always been: here’s some awesome music, let me arrange it in a way that gives you feelings and has a flow and hopefully you’ll feel what I’m feeling and want to dance, too. It’s intensely personal. I am so excited when people get it.

I have ALWAYS wanted to be a DJ. I’ve been putting together mixes [my love language!] and turning people onto music for as long as I can remember. When I went away to college, I signed up to be a DJ for the college on-campus radio station, but I didn’t stick with that school long enough to really get the ropes down. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that I finally got the chance to try my hand at both radio and dance floor DJing.

I am eternally grateful for being allowed to be a radio DJ at WNRN in Charlottesville VA and having regular DJ gigs at venues all over the Mid Atlantic, including VA, DC, MD, NC and NY. I was one of several folks who took care of Subculture Shock on NRN, and I was the promoter and manager as well as a regular DJ at The Dawning in Cville, then the same at Cryptkicker in MD. I got myself a reputation as someone who could build a night on the strength of songs chosen and moods built over extreme technical prowess. I’m not there to intrude on the music, I’m there to make you feel something! It seems to work, as people get on the floor and comment on my playlists. I appreciate that, too.

I have been trying to get back “on air” in some form for a while now. It’s not easy to get the time, equipment, and bandwidth to do live shows or fully DJed ones yet, so for now I’m working through playlist mixes at Spotify. Eventually I’ll graduate to something like Mixcloud along with the Spotify sets. I like the availability of this version of Radio Xiane for everyone. Let me know what you think!

I’m going to try for a show every other week. Let’s see how this goes!
